The Nynäshamn - Ventspils route connects the greater Stockholm area with the Latvian port city of Ventspils on the Courland coast. It's operated year-round by Stena Line, which runs up to two departures a day with the sister ships Stena Baltica and Stena Scandica, both by day and as an overnight ferry. For the roughly nine-hour crossing, it's worth booking a cabin on the overnight departures so you arrive rested in Latvia the next morning.

Nynäshamn - Ventspils ferry at a glance
Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, is the Swedish starting point for the crossing to Latvia. In around nine hours, Stena Line takes you across the Baltic Sea to Ventspils on the Courland coast, by day or overnight in a cabin. For travellers with a car or motorhome, the ferry is the direct link between Scandinavia and the Baltics.
Getting to the terminal in Nynäshamn
The ferry departs from the Norvik terminal, the ferry port south of Stockholm. Enter Norvikvägen 26, 149 45 Nynäshamn as your sat-nav destination. By car, follow road 73 south from Stockholm for around 60 kilometres to the terminal. Paid short- and long-stay parking, as well as electric vehicle charging points, are available right at the port.
Without a car, take the Pendeltåg commuter train from Stockholm to Nynäshamn in about an hour. A free shuttle bus runs from Nynäshamn railway station to the Norvik terminal timed to departures, leaving from stop D. Regular bus routes also connect Nynäshamn with Stockholm and Södertälje.
Check-in and departure
On this route, check-in closes 60 minutes before the scheduled departure, for passengers with vehicles as well as on foot. In Nynäshamn it opens around 2.5 hours beforehand; arrive earlier in high season or with a motorhome or trailer, as late vehicles are no longer accepted on board. At the terminal, drive into the signposted check-in lane, or head to the terminal building as a foot passenger.
Bring a valid ID document - an ID card or passport is enough. Sweden and Latvia are both in the EU and the Schengen area, so this is an intra-EU trip with no customs formalities; Stena Line still requires a valid photo ID for boarding.

The sister ships Stena Baltica and Stena Scandica run this route. On board you'll find a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, a café and bar, a shop, a sun deck, a TV lounge and a children's play area. Cabins are available as Standard, Superior and Deluxe, each with a private bathroom, plus accessible cabins and reclining seats that can be pre-booked. Premium Wi-Fi is available for a fee.
Payment on board is cashless: both ships accept cards only. Credit and debit cards are enough for the restaurant, bar and shop - you won't need Latvian currency or cash for the crossing.
Vehicle, bike and pet
Cars, motorcycles, motorhomes and caravans are carried, as well as bicycles; the longer your vehicle, the higher the fare, so enter the dimensions accurately when booking. Pets are welcome and must be registered when booking. Arrival in Ventspils and onward travel
In Ventspils, the ferry docks centrally at Dārzu iela 6, less than a kilometre from the town centre on the Venta river. The bus station is just a few minutes' walk away, and by car you reach the terminal via the E22 European route. With its long sandy beach and old town, Ventspils itself is a great introduction to the Courland coast.
Riga is around 190 kilometres away and reachable via the E22 as well as regular long-distance buses from Ventspils bus station. From there you can explore the rest of the Baltics, for example towards Lithuania or the Estonian border.
Tickets and fares
Stena Line offers the crossing in three fares: the low-cost Economy ticket, the more flexible Flexi fare, and Premium. With Economy, changes incur a fee plus any price difference, and cancellations aren't refunded. With Flexi you can rebook free of charge and get a refund minus a small fee if you cancel up to 24 hours before departure; Premium allows free changes and a refund up until shortly before departure.
