Travelling to Latvia by motorhome means crossing the Baltic Sea with Stena Line, on two car ferries: Travemünde - Liepāja from Germany and Nynäshamn - Ventspils from Sweden. Both carry cars, motorhomes and trailer combinations. This page covers how to register your vehicle, what matters at the terminal, and what onward travel into the Baltics looks like. Registration and vehicle dimensions
Booking is done online with the ferry operator, and the dimensions determine your parking space and price. State the total length and height including all attachments: bike racks, roof boxes and tow bars all count. Even a few centimetres can cause problems at check-in. For particularly long or tall vehicles, or combinations with a trailer, contact Stena Line directly before booking.
Check-in and terminals
Allow enough time: check-in closes 60 minutes before departure. In Travemünde, the ferry departs from the Skandinavienkai terminal (Zum Hafenplatz 1, Lübeck-Travemünde); follow the signs to the check-in lane and show your ID and vehicle documents. In Nynäshamn, check-in opens around two and a half hours before departure; in Ventspils, about three hours before.
On board: cabin and payment
Both routes sail overnight, so a cabin is worth booking for sleeping; camping in your own vehicle isn't possible, as the car deck stays locked during the crossing. So bring everything you'll need en route into the cabin before boarding. Payment on board is cashless: the Latvia ferries accept standard credit and debit cards as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay, while cash is only accepted at slot machines. Currency exchange isn't available on board.
Arrival and onward travel in Latvia
Depending on the route, you arrive in Latvia at Liepāja (from Travemünde) or Ventspils (from Nynäshamn). Both ports are around two and a half hours by car from Riga and are well connected to the motorway network. If you're continuing through the Baltics towards Lithuania or Estonia, the through route Via Baltica connects it all.

Do I need a cabin, or can I sleep in my motorhome?+
Recommended. Both Latvia routes sail overnight: Travemünde - Liepāja takes around a day, Nynäshamn - Ventspils just over nine hours. Sleeping in your own motorhome on board isn't possible, as the car deck stays locked during the crossing. So you sleep in a cabin, not in the vehicle. Bring everything you need before boarding.
