The Travemünde - Liepāja route is the only direct ferry from Germany to Latvia, connecting the Skandinavienkai terminal in Lübeck-Travemünde with the port of Liepāja on Latvia's Baltic coast. It's operated by Stena Line, with one departure per day in each direction, usually daily except Sundays. The sister ships Stena Flavia and Stena Horizon run this freight-oriented RoPax route.
Since the crossing takes a good day and runs overnight, it's worth booking a cabin; reclining seats are also available. On board you'll find a restaurant, café and a shop. In Liepāja you step straight into the Baltics: the A9 takes you to Riga, and from there the Via Baltica continues north or south.

Getting to the terminal in Travemünde
The ferry to Liepāja departs from Skandinavienkai, one of Europe's largest ferry ports. Enter Zum Hafenplatz 1, 23570 Lübeck-Travemünde as your sat-nav destination. By car, take the A1 to Lübeck, then the A226 and B75 to the terminal, taking the Skandinavienkai-Nord exit. Coming from Puttgarden, the route also runs via the A1 and A226 to the same terminal.
Paid long-stay and short-stay car parks are available right at the port. If you're travelling as a foot passenger, take bus line 50 from Lübeck's main railway station, which runs roughly every 30 minutes on weekdays direct to Skandinavienkai; on Sundays, line 34 runs hourly.
Check-in and departure
Check-in closes for all passengers 60 minutes before the scheduled departure. If you're travelling with a vehicle, arrive at the terminal a bit earlier so check-in goes smoothly; at Skandinavienkai, follow the Stena Line signs to check-in. Vehicles arriving late are no longer accepted on board.
Have the ID of everyone travelling and the vehicle documents ready - Stena Line checks these at check-in. Travemünde and Liepāja are both in the EU and the Schengen area, so no routine border checks apply; a valid ID document is still required.
On board
The sister ships Stena Flavia and Stena Horizon run this route. On board you'll find a restaurant, a café and a shop selling cosmetics, perfume and spirits at reduced prices. Since the crossing runs overnight, it's worth booking a cabin; reclining seats are available as a cheaper alternative.
As Germany and Latvia both use the euro, you pay in euros on board and in both ports throughout - no currency exchange is needed for this crossing.

As a freight-oriented RoPax ferry, the route carries cars, motorhomes, trailer combinations and motorcycles. Pets are welcome but must be registered when booking. Stena Line keeps a limited number of pet cabins on this route, which must be booked in advance. To enter Latvia you'll need an EU pet passport, a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination.
Arrival in Liepāja and onward travel
In Liepāja, the ferry docks at Brīvostas iela 14A, LV-3405. A few parking spaces are available at the terminal, and short-term parking is free. Without your own vehicle, you can reach the terminal on bus lines 10 and 11; the railway station is less than a 30-minute walk away, and long-distance buses to Riga leave daily from Liepāja bus station.
By car, the A9 takes you to Riga in a good two hours. From there you can join the Via Baltica (E67), the main artery through the Baltics towards Estonia in the north and Lithuania and Poland in the south. Heading south, you can reach Lithuania quickly via Klaipėda.
